The Sticky Green Heath of Silvermine — This unusual Erica urna-viridis derives its name from the Latin urna, meaning “urn”, and viridis, meaning “green”, describing the shape and colour of its flowers.
A rare, range-restricted endemic, this species occurs only in the Silvermine area of the central Cape Peninsula. It is commonly found in scattered colonies across the Steenberg plateau and high ridges above Kalk Bay — and nowhere else on Earth.
The sticky flowers are believed to protect against insects attempting to steal nectar by boring holes into the corolla. (Ref: SANBI)
